MSN Chat Transcript

MSN, December 4th 2000.

DishDiva:
Guys, great to see you!
We are huge fans of "Maroon" here in the MSN Live Studio.
I understand we are backstage with the Barenaked Ladies.

BNL_Live:
Indianapolis.

DishDiva:
SilverDomer Asks: Unfortunately, I won't be attending the "Bowling with BNL" event in Detroit, but who's the best bowler in the bunch?

BNL_Live:
Ed's pretty good, I'm pretty good as well, so I don't know, maybe Ed. We'll see on that night.
I think it's Dec. 8th or something.

DishDiva:
What's the date on that?
You can check BNLMusic.com for more on the dates
cocobnl Says: About "Off the Hook"... did you guys have the Clintons in mind when you wrote this song?

BNL_Live:
I don't think so, Ed and Steve wrote the song. I don't think they had the Clintons in mind, but I'm sure it applies to them or anyone that has a relationship that goes kind of south.

DishDiva:
julesbnl144 Asks: How is life different now that you have become a part of pop culture?

BNL_Live:
Perhaps you should tell us Jules, you're the star around here. (laugh)
Tyler: I think we get recognized somewhat and the success of "Stunt" took that to a new level, but we're just trying to keep it real.

DishDiva:
imcr8zyboutBNL says: I know that you guys are big X-files fans. Was "Conventioneers written about Mulder and Scully?

BNL_Live:
(laugh) There's a famous quote that Tyler said "You will never see Mulder's manhood engaging with Scully's womanhood." That's the gist of it. I don't want that relationship to happen, I like the tension of it all.
The question is how she got pregnant...

DishDiva:
IWakeUpStrange Asks: Ok, my question for BNL is- When are their fans going to get to see the Pay-Per-View special they filmed in Orlando, Florida last month? Thanks.

BNL_Live:
The answer to that, we don't know that.
I think it's supposed to come out this month. I think sometime over the Christmas season it will become available.
We also have the CD coming available "Barenaked in America." That will become available soon.
Also the Nutty Professor 2 with me dressed up in makeup to make me look just like Eddie Murphy.
I think it's funny that they would go into so much effort for a fart joke. (laugh!!)

DishDiva:
Jennifer__1974 Asks: Hey Guys. Your Sept. show in Chicago was awesome. Love Maroon. Are your little "raps" and jokes on stage improvised/off-the-cuff? They really add to the show and showcase you as all-around entertainers!

BNL_Live:
Yes, we get onstage every night not knowing what's going to happen. We have a set list on what songs we're going to play, but we always build in about half an hour into the set for spontanious music. People who have seen us a few times know that each time the show is different. Also if we had the time to write the stuff, hopefully it would be increasingly better.
Also the night we did Mustache Sally, we spent a lot of time on. (laugh)

DishDiva:
Hobbes_888 Says: what gave you the idea for "pinch me"

BNL_Live:
I was riding on the NY subway and I was pinched. (laugh) No.. I was sort of ruminating on the unrealized potential as we grow up and that feeling of growing up that I have the potential to do something amazing, but hey, there's double episodes of WKRP in Cincinatti tonight, so hey I'll just stay in. It's that scream that comes out as a yawn.

DishDiva:
merlin81181 Says: Why do all the members of bnl wear boxer briefs?

BNL_Live:
Because our "minds" are so huge!

DishDiva:
AmzngJen_mi Asks: What album did you guys have the most fun recording?

BNL_Live:
Probably this one. I thought the energy level and effort of the group was higher. We'd go in at 11am and have a begal and a shot and get right into it. Then it's 11 at night and we'd done 3 songs already. We got results instantly. I think as a band we were at our strongest, we haven't performed this well in the studio and it just made this thing a gas.

DishDiva:
best_day_on_earth_Feb_24 says: Do you think your new found success, paid off for those 10 years, of hard work?

BNL_Live:
We are the classic story of the overnight success that was 10 years in the making. I think our new found success gives us more luxery here in life. Tyler, Steve and myself (Ed) have young families and now we can bring them on the road with us where as a few years ago, we couldn't afford that. So it lets us do what we want to do, which is hard, but with a level of comfort.

DishDiva:
L8YBUG1 Asks: What is a typical day in the life of a barenaked lady like?

BNL_Live:
We'll run off today for you. I woke up to the sound of my son crying from the adjoining room, that was about 5 am, then we ordered room service and then my kids and wife went off and then I did an hour of interviews, then packed up the hotel. Then did a live radio station where there were 50 people who won and we played for them. Then we came to the venue and did another interview, an hour soundcheck, and then signed autographs for more people who won another contest. Then we had a small break, and now we're doing this with you and at about 8 we'll start our concert. After that, I'll try and squeeze in a small workout and then we'll have a meet and greet, and we'll say hi to friends, family and fans. Then we'll get on a bus and go to Milwaukee and do it all over again.
Mine was the same way, but when I woke up the sun was gone and then I slipped away. (laugh)

DishDiva:
PunkinBlue Says: Do your family members ever make "guest appearances" in your videos?

BNL_Live:
Only in my dreams!! (Laugh)
My nephew Mitchell was in our video "Enid" and Steve's dad was in our first video, the guy smoking "Lovers in a Dangerous Time."

DishDiva:
BoardingBean Asks: I want to thank you for the awesome concert you gave in October in West Palm Beach, Fl. My question is: What is your favorite song to play live and which song would you be happy to never play live again?

BNL_Live:
That concert was on my birthday.
My parents were there at that show.
Ed: We really like "Off The Hook."
There are some songs we don't enjoy playing and don't.
Except "Million Dollars" because we'll play that until we die.
We wouldn't sit down in the dressing room and want to play "Million Dollars" because we've played it at every show for the last 12 years.

DishDiva:
NiceSpookyCat Says: How did you feel about how the Behind the Music turned out?

BNL_Live:
Well, Nice Spooky Cat, it was a nice spooky show. I watched it like, wow that's a great story, it was pretty compelling.
I liked it because it's one of those benchmarks where I noticed at the time and we got a Grammy nomination at the time for "Stunt." Behind the music was a big benchmark and Weird Al.

DishDiva:
Here's a quirky questions shortdude14 says: What was the worst injury you guys ever got by flying Kraft Dinner?

BNL_Live:
I was hit right in the nuts and it hurt, but the time that hurt the most was in Cincinatti. I got a full box thrown at me from the Taft theater.
I got a whole box hurrled from the balcony and it hit me in the cheek, just below my eye and that hurt a bit. Steve got hit in the head, and I (Tyler) acted like a stunt and ran off with someone chasing me down with a box. So we encourage you NOT to throw them, I'm sure that your local food bank would love it, and tell them BNL sent you.

DishDiva:
MJskates Says: One of my favorite songs is "Good Boy" and I've noticed that you often close with this song. Does it have a special meaning for all of you?

BNL_Live:
Yeah, "Good Boy" is one of the first songs that we wrote that turned a lot of people's heads as to the possibilities of this band and I think it's been a crowd and band favorite for a long time. It's a song that's simple and it's just a pretty song. It's nice to play it.

DishDiva:
I know you guys need to head out and get ready for your show. . last question is from
datebabe who says: What are your plans for the holidays?

BNL_Live:
Well... we've got a lot more work to do, we're working until Dec. 20th and then I'm taking off with my family, we have a place on the lake where there's lots of snow and just hide out.
I'm going to spend some time in Toronto, it's our final Chirstmas in that house because we're moving and my parents will have Christmas dinner in their new home.
Then I'll be spending New Year's Eve with my good friend Tyler Stewart in Fleet Center.
Then hopefully we'll get to go somewhere warm. (laugh)

DishDiva:
Guys, thanks for joining us tonight! Have a great show tonight!

BNL_Live:
Thank you very much!!
